Panorama Route: Where the journey is the destination

My Beautiful World
Nature
South Africa

For hundreds of kilometres, the Panorama Route dissects verdant forests, rolling hills, and geological structures carved from time. Meandering through the eastern Mpumalanga escarpment, this iconic South African journey leads wanderers to heavenly marvels.

GO: Join the R37 from the town of Lydenburg. Veer onto Long Tom Pass and follow the 150-kilometre winding trip. With breathtaking vistas from every angle, the Panorama Route lives up to its name.

SEE: Discover a national monument that takes the form of twin 65-metre waterfalls. Mac Mac Falls are cascading phenomena, with one carved by nature and the other the result of a mining blast. Walk along curved paths to witness this spectacle.

Continue onto the R534 to experience one of South Africa’s most captivating viewpoints. From God’s Window, peer across a seemingly-endless landscape of indigenous forest and rock formations.

Keep your eyes out for the 30-metre natural tower that overlooks the terrain. Pinnacle Rock, a quartzite geological structure, bursts from the earth. Bracketed with aloes and ferns, admire one of the region’s finest emblems.

DO: Along Long Tom Pass, find a reminder of the Second Boer War. A replica of the Long Tom Cannon is on display for guests to unpack South Africa’s history.

Ditch the car and explore your surroundings along thrilling horse riding trails with Coopers Creek. Relish wide-open expanses while traversing the Sabie plains.

Make an unusual descent into Graskop Gorge with a 51-metre lift. Follow wooden walkways through the Afromontane forests that myriad wildlife species call home, including the lesser striped sparrow, spotted genet, and vervet monkey.

If you believe that adventure lies with the journey and not the destination, take the beaten track of Panorama Route and encounter an untapped world of harmony and history.
