“Nothing can cross my mind. Nothing can make me sad.” Who doesn’t crave that feeling? Lost in the act of doing, untroubled by the world. Some go running to get there. Others choose meditation. Mama Sharon bakes.

Sharon Cithabathwa is the owner of Nourish Bakery in Imizamo Yethu, an informal settlement in Cape Town. She makes cost effective, high quality bread and baked goods for her community – while persuading local teenagers to help her. The kids learn a skill, stay out of trouble and gain opportunities for future employment.

Cithabathwa is empowered as a business owner. She uses her position as a way to lift others up, bringing entrepreneurship and outreach together. It’s a mutually beneficial approach that is changing lives in her community.
