Sink your feet in the silky white sand and sapphire waters of this secluded locale. Those seeking more extreme activities can head to the Waimea Bay where big wave surfing originated in the 1950s.
Overlooking these pristine waters, a wonder of nature beckons. Millions of years ago, the Ko'olau Volcano Range began rumbling beneath the surface of the ocean. Following an eruption around 300 000 years ago, the 'Diamond Head’ crater came to fruition. The name was inspired by British sailors who thought they struck wealth when they discovered glittering calcite crystals on the slopes in the 19th century. To experience a panoramic view of the island from atop this volcanic tuff cone, embark on the two-hour Diamond Head hike. More trails await on the edge of Oahu’s southeastern coast where the Makapu'u Point Lighthouse sits on a 183-metres cliff. Beaming with over a thousand prisms, this beacon houses the largest lighthouse lens in the world. To reach this landmark, follow the four-kilometre Makapu‘u Point Lighthouse Trail with a glimpse of Koko crater along the way.
